The joys of EU energy market liberalisation. EDF, the French mostly state owned energy firm, bought London Energy a few years ago – the firm is the main electricity company for most of London. Personally I don’t have any problem with this, with the partial difficulty that EDF is pro nuclear power. But I imagine that EDF thinks that Brits might have a problem with their electricity coming from a French firm. So what do they do about it? Make a massive effort to back very British sports events and projects – the 2012 London Olympic bid, and now ITV’s coverage of the World Cup. I wonder whether they backed the Paris bid too? Anyway, very smart I reckon – even if the jingles during the football get a bit annoying.
